JAVIER GUILLÉN

Veterinarian by the University of Zaragoza in Spain, was for 17 years Director of the Laboratory Animal Services at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, where he still holds a position in the Ethics Committee as external member.  In 2008 he joined AAALAC International as staff, where he is the current Senior Director for Europe and Latin America. Former President of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) and the Spanish Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SECAL).

He is also member of the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) Governing Board; the Laboratory Animals Ltd. Executive Committee; the European Animal Research Association (EARA) Board; and former President of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) and the Spanish Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SECAL). 
He has published a number of articles/chapters on several laboratory animal topics, with special emphasis on legislation and quality, including the book “Laboratory Animals: Regulations and Recommendations for the Care and Use of Animals in Research” which second edition has been released in 2017.
He has participated in several Expert Working Groups by the European Commission for the implementation of Directive 2010/63/EU.

Current position
In 2008 he joined AAALAC International as Senior Director and Director of European Activities. Since 2013 he is Senior Director for Europe and Latin America. 

Other related activities
He served first as Secretary (2002-2008) and later as President (2009-2010) of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA).

Since 2014 he is member of the European Animal Research Association (EARA) Board.
Since 2011 he is member of the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) Governing Board 
Since 2010 he is representative of the Spanish Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SECAL) to the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS).
Since 2010 he is member of the Council of Management of Laboratory Animals Ltd., the Charity publishing The Journal Laboratory Animals, and since 2011, member of the Executive Committee.
He is former President of SECAL, the Spanish Association for Laboratory Animal Science (was President in 2014-2015).
