1985 - 2005 Director of Animal Welfare, University of Sheffield. Responsible for overseeing the scientific use of animals and their welfare within the University of Sheffield. Named Veterinary Surgeon under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, 1986; Departmental Radiation and Biological Safety Officer; Quarantine Facilities Supervisor (MAFF). Also Director of a Tissue Culture Laboratory (Sheffield Hybridomas, now Bioserve) set up to avoid the use of animals for monoclonal antibody production.
AAALACi Member Emeritus of the European Board, which comprises 12 Board members drawn from across Europe.
LASA Ex President and Honorary Member.
UFAW (Universities Federation for Animal Welfare). Previously Chair of Council and currently a Vice-President. UFAW not only has a broad interest in animal welfare issues, but the Council also oversees activities of the Humane Slaughter Association.
